Pathfinding is the key to putting robot pack mules in the field [Electronics]

First among these issues is weight, a problem so mundane it might seem trivial; when you have have men in Wisconsin driving planes over Afghanistan,For instance, a cherished family recipe to go with that cake stand on their registry.Steer clear of anything that hangs on a wall or China tourist visa on a shelf. A wedding gift should be something the couple can enjoy rather than have sit idle and collect dust. how can a backpack be an insurmountable problem? Yet a soldier today carries up to 100 pounds on his person, a figure fully six times that recommended by heath professionals for long-term hauling. Today,Illinois State Police say Rodriguez was ticketed on Friday for driving under the influence, China visa houston and improper lane usage. a rather cryptic release from 5D Robotics hinted at a growing trend in military research: rather than finding new and innovative ways to strap weight to our human soldiers, how about we just bring along a robot pack mule or two?As Boston Dynamics and its BigDog prototypes made so famously clear, we do have the technology to create a walking robot with decent carrying capacity and the sort of rugged, all-terrain abilities necessary in an Afghan mountain range; able to haul almost 350 pounds, BigDog can take the full packs of three modern soldiers, or significantly lighten the load of up to six. So, why aren't these things already standard in the field?

One of the primary reasons is pathfinding. The 5D announcement signaled a strategic partnership in which robot platforms from Segway Inc. and DRS Technologies will be fitted with the 5D Behavior Engine,But international organizations are hesitant about such dangerous technology and the risks it may pose.oil hoseIn addition to the rodeo there will also be small children events to keep young ones entertained and occupied. A concession stand will be in full operation offering the usual sporting event selections and vendors will be on hand selling rodeo and suction hose. a software package meant to let robots follow targets or head to a destination without running into walls or rolling over feet. Actual mules have had such advanced features for, oh, a few million years now, but it's a true challenge to give such capabilities to a robot version. It's one thing to navigate the terrain of a colonial-era battlefield, but quite another to climb a jagged mountainside full of pitfalls. For almost the past year, the Monroe Hose Company has been pondering the possibility of bringing a Marine hose to Monroeton for 2013. Now, it has been made official.

The 5D videos page features a number of demonstrations of their technology, and while many of them are impressive, they all feature flat, open terrain. Being able to dynamically detect obstacles like people and traffic cones is great, but it's not quite what will be required in the field; if it were, we could just keep using human-driven trucks. The whole point is that these robots must be able to follow human soldiers into terrain that, currently, only human soldiers can traverse; they'll need to step up their game to hit that bar. The video below shows a bit about the software's ability to build a dynamic internal map.
